4. Data Analysis
After Three week’s training, the students’ ability of guessing new words in specific situation was greatly improved and they felt more confident in doing reading comprehension than before.
The project here brings the students two aspects of the improvement: student’s ability of guessing new words and their confidence of doing reading comprehension. Actually, almost all the students can overcome some new words better through what they have learned and do comprehension more easily as well as correctly than before. They have make apparent progress in guessing unknown words they come across in reading and efficiency and their confidence of doing reading comprehension.
The results of the two compassions contrasted with what they were before the project implementations are presented in Graph 1 and table 1 and Graph 2, table 2.
Ability:
Graph 1 shows that most of the students’ ability of guessing new words is greatly improved after the project implementation.
Before implementation there are only 3 percent of the students who have larger vocabulary than the other students can overcome the new words very well without any difficulty and 15 percent of the students can use what they learned or refer to the relation between the context to guess some unknown words when they do the reading comprehension. And about 27 percent of them prefer guessing new words than looking them up in the dictionary, but they cannot understand the reading material very well because they can overcome only few of the new words they have ever faced. Meanwhile, 38 percent of the students seldom guess the new words and 17 percent of them rely on looking up something and never think trying guessing some of them.
However, after they received the training in improving ability of guessing new words, 24 percent of them can use the skill overcome their barrier of new words very well and 49 percent can guess some words effectively. 18 percent students sometimes refer to some dictionaries. From the graph we can see that most of the student have made rapid progress after the training.
