Material 1
Purpose: Use the former knowledge to practise guessing new words.
Instruction: Students tell the meaning of the words according to their former knowledge.
Procedures: Firstly, read through the context as fast as they can, paying a little attention to the underlined words. Then guess the meaning of the underlined words with their former knowledge.

Last week I took a group of French holidaymakers for a week’s trip to Taiwan. We traveled all around the island. I found it is as beautiful as many other places of the country. And there are a lot of places of interest. My favourite place was the Sun and Moon Lake. You may ask why people call it so. If you fly high up over the lake and look down around from your plane, you will find the answer yourself. In the middle of this lake, there is a small island. People call it Pearl Island because it looks like a pearl. On one side of Pearl Island the lake looks like a sun, and on the other side it looks like a moon. That is why people call the lake the Sun and Moon Lake.
Write out the meanings of the following words:
