On the little piece of paper there are three topics, and I have chosen the topic entitled "If I Were The Minister of Education." Why this topic? Because I am a student, I know what students are thinking about nowadays. Besides, I want to give my opinions concerning the reform of education. Were I the minister of department of education, I'd like to change the exam system into an ideal one. We might marvel at the progress made in every field of study, but the methods of test-ing a student's knowledge and ability remain as primitive as they have ever been. It really is extraordinary that after all these years, educationists still fail to devise anything more efficient and reliable than the present system. Many students blame that exams may be a good means of testing memory, but they tell you nothing about a student's true ability. However, nearly every student devotes a lot of time to preparing for exams. Why? Because of the marks. Everyone works hard to obtain a high mark. So the difference be-tween different marks should be eliminated. Instead, the 5-point system should be adopted, under which the teachers' task is to tell every student what the problem is in their exams and how they can do better next time. In this way, students will no longer re-gard exams as the most terrible thing and will take the right atti-tude towards exams. Were I the minister of department of education, I would let students have more choices among their subjects. As we know, the realization of China's modernization relies on the young people of today. How should our students be trained to cope wisely in the future? China needs talents that have developed greatly in terms of the moral, intellectual and physical standards. So we have to put right the tendency of stressing only intellectual education and ig-noring moral and physical education. Were I the minister of department of education, I would en-courage students to mingle with society and nature so that they can become more adaptable to the society in the future. This makes it necessary that their courses should have variety. Were I the minister of department of education, I would also improve our teachers' living and working conditions. As soon as our comrade Deng Xiaoping resumed off ice, he remarked: "Educa-tion is a continuous process and the pay and conditions for teach-ers from the most elementary level must be improved. " This statement was most encouraging. However, the progress has been painfully slow since it was made. So today, who wants to marry a teacher? Who wants to become a teacher? Especially when far bet-ter prospects are offered in other occupations. Of course, many dedicated people are still willing, or even eager to become and re-main teachers. Many, but not enough. Therefore, we must encour-age more people to become teachers, so that the large number of students in a class can be reduced. And at the same time, the qual-ity of education can become better. Well, of course, everything depends on "if". But I think the reform of education will be successful. I do not care if I will really become the minister of education, but I do believe that our educa-tion in the 21st century will certainly become highly developed with everyone's effort. And I do believe we will have a bright fu-ture!
