To grow a heart

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

When I become a teacher, I was so idealistic that I dreamed of helping all the students by everything I can do. As time goes by, thinking that I was too insignificant to affect change, I just let go of my dream. In these years, I observed that the older I got, the less I helped. Why? Whether I had legitimate reasons or apologetic excuses. It remains that I didn’t help as much as I wanted to.

How many of you, like me, had grand dreams of improving students’ abilities? How many of you, like me, started turning your attention inward the older you got? How many of you, like me, become more and more pessimistic about being an English teacher to make a difference?

However, things began to change that day.

Tired after class as usual, I was followed by two students to my office. Looking into their eyes, I noticed that they had something to share with me. Their first question shocked me. “Mrs Wang, have you ever thought getting more educated to fulfill your dream rather than being a teacher?” I stunned, completely unexpected. It occurred to me that every day students noticed my changes, cares for me and kept every details in mind. At that moment, I realized students have a kind of expectation of me. Maybe in their eyes, I should be like warrior, fighting for the way to success and never say give up! Sometimes I should be like a guide, pointing out a bright way for future!

It was mutral trust that brought my optimistic back and made me feel it is my honour to be an English teacher! Blessed with students’ wishes and encouragement, I still go on even though help is just little. Everyday, I smile at my students smoothly and roughly; I persist to get educated, promoted, set a good example. These do let me from coldness to warmth, from a colorless existence, to being in a rainbow, from where there was once no future, to where everything is possible. I have always appreciated the experience being a teacher and the way it has helped to change me. I realized that to be a teacher is much about receiving, as it is about giving.

To grow a heart, to offer assistance to the needy and to each other, and our efforts have indeed made a difference. Whether we are helping students with their schooling, or just smiling at them, will not only contribute to strengthen friendship but elevate ourselves as well. Emerson once said “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself” and he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hope everyone of you become excellent; but I hope even more that all of us, by giving more care to students, can lead a fulfilling life we will never regret having lived!
