    15.1985年，Adam Przeworski在Capitalism and Social Democracy（Cambridge：Cambridge University Press，1985）一书中已经指出，二战以后，资本主义国家与工人阶级之间达成了一项历史性的阶级妥协：资本主义民主允许工人阶级争取和扩大福利权利；而工人阶级放弃推翻资本主义，转而争取改革资本主义。但在过去十几年里，随着国际共产主义运动的式微，自由放任主义者及其政治代表人物，似乎打算单方面废弃这个妥协。他们鼓吹摧毁福利国家，取消基本社会保障。这一切引起了自由左派的忧虑。Holmes和Sunstein表达的便是自由左派的看法。
